This is where we had our very first Vegans Unite lunch! This time, we're going back for dinner. According to a post on eatability.com.au - 'Strict vegans are not a demographic that is well catered for, in our experience, so we are very grateful for this place. Their expertise and range with gluten astonishes, ans has inspired me to be more experimental in the kitchen. I love the buffet, but the laksa from the menu is also wonderful. Alcohol is not allowed, so there is an ascetic vibe, but even that can be soothing and pleasant for a change.'

If you aren't a vegetarian, avoid reading the back of the takeaway menu, you may just be convinced to turn :)'

A group of vegans and would-be-vegans started the evening at the Animal Liberation NSW office for a screening of the documentary 'Peaceable Kingdom'. About fifteen of us shared movie watching snacks, and then tears and tissues as the documentary told of the plight of farmed animals. At the conclusion of the viewing the room was silent as we gathered our thoughts and then slowly started to discuss what we had seen and how we felt about it. There was definitly a feeling of solidarity surrounding what it means to be vegan and the difference it makes to the lives of animals. This part of the evening ended on a positive note with around $100 collected in donations and merchandies sales for Animal Liberation NSW.

Vegans Unite - First Event a Great Success.

A BIG Thank You to everyone who attended the inaugral Vegans Unite Sydney event, last Saturday March 19th.

A group of vegans and would-be-vegans started our day with a visit to Newtown's popular organic food co-op, Alfalfa House. About ten of us spent some time browsing, buying and chatting about vegan products, recipes and ingredients. I for one indulged in some organic almond and raisin chocolate and got tempted to try some baby figs I'd not yet sampled. We moved on to Life Organic, a bit of a hike, but we felt well rewarded with the friendly service and array of treats on offer such as nut mixes, teas and tonics, puddings and some rare imports and delicacies.

Next stop, a favourite of Sydney vegans, The Vegans Choice Grocery Store. We were met by Proprietor Colin Fung and his staff who talked us through some interesting meat substitutes, soup mixes and sauces, but the favourite of the day had to be the range of home made tofu ice-cream in flavours like black sesame, kiwi, green tea and lotus seed - mmm, moreish. Our next planned stop was yum cha at Colins adjoining restaurant Green Gourmet, so we left ice-cream selection for later!

Saturday 19th: Yum Cha Lunch at Green Gourmet Restaurant

115-117 King Street
Newtown, Sydney
phone: 9519 5330
web: www.greengourmet.com.au
map: CitySearch

For lunch we were joined by another 10 hungry vegans who had forgone the shopping trip in favour of lunch, and I can't say I blamed them. While the shoppers had built up our appetites walking around Newtown, the others no doubt had built up theirs in anticipation of the feast that lay ahead. It is here that I must commend Green Gourmet on their friendly, fast service. It can't be easy waiting on 20 hungry vegans! The 100% vegan food was delicious and I maintain, amongst the best in Sydney.

Thanks again to everyone who attended and to the retailers and proprietors who helped to make the day easy to manage and enjoyable.
